Breast Augmentation

Adult women who are unhappy with the size or shape of their breasts are often able to address their cosmetic concerns with breast implant surgery, or breast augmentation.

When Is Breast Augmentation The Right Choice?

Arlington breast augmentation specialist Dr. James Ward recommends saline or silicone gel breast implants to patients who desire a more proportionate figure and larger breasts.

Breast augmentation can help patients who want to:

  • Enlarge small breasts
  • Increase cleavage or upper pole fullness
  • Balance asymmetric breasts
  • Correct mild breast drooping
  • Correct misshapen breasts and certain breast deformities

Breast augmentation patients should be healthy non-smokers who are cleared to undergo anesthesia by our board certified anesthesiologists. Breast augmentation is particularly popular amongst moms who want to regain their pre-baby body and is commonly performed in combination with breast lift surgery.

How Breast Implants Treat Small or Asymmetric Breasts

Breast implants are made of a thin silicone shell that contains silicone gel or saline fluid measured in cc’s. When surgically inserted either above or below the chest muscles, breast implants enhance existing breast tissue by adding volume proportionate to the breast implant size, which is determined by the amount of saline or silicone material in the implants. Breast augmentation surgery can also correct breast asymmetry by adding more volume to one breast than the other, balancing the size of the breasts.

Post-Operative Steps: What to Expect After Breast Augmentation

You can expect to return home within a few hours of breast augmentation surgery with the help of a friend or family member. Take things slow for the first three days, but do begin gently walking around within 24 hours. You will feel some discomfort and soreness, but this can be managed with appropriate pain medication. In addition, you will receive an antibiotic at the time of surgery that will help prevent infection during breast augmentation recovery.

Your first follow-up appointment with Dr. Ward will be a day or two after surgery. Your incisions will be sealed with Dermabond (a medical-grade super glue), so you may shower on the first day post-op. You should be sure to wear the post-operative sports bra as directed. Most breast augmentation patients resume work within 7-10 days of surgery and aerobic exercise within 3-6 weeks.
