Breast reconstruction surgery is designed to rebuild the breast mounds of patients who have undergone mastectomy, or breast removal surgery, and restore natural feminine curves.
Mastectomy patients who experience any of the following issues after having one or both breasts removed should consider breast reconstruction:
Every woman who has lost their breasts to cancer should feel empowered to undergo breast reconstruction, although not every surgeon who performs mastectomy presents this option. It is important to know that in most cases, breast reconstruction may be performed at any time after or concurrently with mastectomy.
There are many techniques Dr. Ward may recommend to reconstruct your breasts. Most patients choose either tissue expanders and breast implants or a flap procedure, such as TRAM flap, DIEP flap or latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction.
Tissue expanders are generally the simplest breast reconstruction option. They resemble breast implants and can be slowly filled with saline over time to help the chest skin stretch to eventually accommodate full-sized breast implants made of saline or silicone gel.
Flap procedures, on the other hand, are more complex surgeries that involve moving skin, tissues and sometimes muscle from the abdomen or back area to the chest.
Arlington breast reconstruction patients can rest assured that Dr. Ward will discuss all of your breast reconstruction options with you in detail and recommend the procedure that will produce the best possible results.
Most breast reconstruction patients require a 2-5 day stay at the comfortable and well-equipped USMD Hospital following surgery. After returning home, it is best to have a friend or family member nearby for at least 1-2 weeks. It typically takes six weeks to recover from breast reconstruction and resume all activity, however this varies significantly depending on which breast reconstruction procedure you undergo and your unique healing progress. Dr. Ward will see you regularly for follow-up appointments and advise you on when additional stages of reconstruction surgery may be scheduled.
