Men and women in the Mid-Cities area often come to Arlington plastic surgeon Dr. James Ward for eyelid surgery. This procedure is often beneficial for individuals who struggle with sagging upper eyelids and bags under their eyes, which add years to one's appearance.
Eyelid surgery, also referred to as blepharoplasty, is a proven procedure performed by Dr. Ward to correct many issues associated with advanced aging around the eyes. Patients choose eyelid surgery to correct or improve the appearance of:
Eyelid surgery, which was performed more than 200,000 times in the US, according to the ASPS, can often be combined with other facial procedures such as a brow lift or facelift.
While you should be a healthy nonsmoker in order to undergo this procedure, there are some conditions which may make not make you an ideal patient, such as: thyroid issues, dry eye, diabetes, cardiovascular problems or glaucoma, among others. In your consultation, Dr. Ward will go over the requirements for the surgery and may ask you to undergo a medical evaluation, including a vision test.
To begin the surgery, which can take one to two hours and is done in the safety and convenience of the USMD Hospital, Dr. Ward's board certified anesthesiologist will administer a local anesthetic. Careful to make incisions that will be hidden in the natural contours of your upper and lower eyelids, Dr. Ward will separate the overlying skin from the fatty tissue and muscle underneath. He will remove any excess skin that is stretched and hanging and also take out any fat deposits that may gave your eye area a baggy look. Using fine sutures, Dr. Ward will then close the incisions and cover them with a surgical dressing. He may also lubricate your eyes at the end of the surgery.
As the anesthesia wears off after your surgery, your eyelids may feel tight. You should keep your head elevated for the next several days and apply cold compresses as needed to minimize swelling and bruising. Post-operative pain you experience may be managed with medication. Though your recovery time is about a week and a half, you may not wear contact lenses for about two weeks and must refrain from exercising for three weeks. Please follow Dr. Ward's specific instructions for steps on post-operative care after your eyelid surgery.
