Juvederm® Injectable Gel

Though surgical interventions like a facelift can dramatically reduce lines and wrinkles, facial fillers like Juvederm can do it more quickly and with nearly no recovery time. In the USMD Hospital, Arlington plastic surgeon Dr. James Ward offers Juvederm treatments to men and women who wish to diminish visible facial folds and wrinkles.

When Is Juvederm the Right Choice?

Juvederm is a popular, proven injectable filler. It is biodegradable, colorless and contains hyaluronic acids, similar to a component that hydrates your skin making it appear smoother and healthier. Juvederm adds structure and volume when injected, and can correct the following issues:

  • Facial folds and wrinkles
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines
  • Hollow tear trough
  • Lip augmentation and other facial contouring

Juvederm, which is produced by Allergan, comes in different formulas based on the patient's needs. During your consultation, Dr. Ward will discuss the appropriate treatment for you.

How Juvederm Treats Wrinkles and Folds

Before beginning, your face will be cleansed and you may be given a topical anesthetic, though Juvederm does contain lidocaine to manage pain. Using a special injection technique, Dr. Ward will place the Juvederm gel into and below the dermis of your skin, where it will bind with the natural hyaluronic acid in your body. Dr. Ward may massage the injection site gently to ensure proper placement.

Post-Treatment Steps: What to Expect

After your Juvederm treatment, it is not uncommon for the injection site to feel overly full and some swelling to occur. This can be controlled with the indirect application of an ice pack. For the first day, you should avoid exercise, alcohol, sun or heat exposure, which may have adverse effects on the treatment area. You should expect to see the results of your treatment for six to 12 months, but may require touch-ups periodically to maintain the effect. Over time, the biodegradable solution will be absorbed by your body. Possible side effects may include redness, lumps/bumps, discoloration or infection.
