Liposuction

For many of us, getting rid of extra body fat can seem impossible. In the USMD Hospital in Arlington, plastic surgeon Dr. James Ward performs liposuction procedures to permanently recontour areas of prominence due to excess fat.

When Is Liposuction the Right Choice?

Though liposuction is not a weight loss method, patients often turn to Dr. Ward to help them remove fat that is causing figure flaws in prominent areas. It is a popular and proven procedure for body slimming that can be performed almost anywhere from the breasts, to the arms and neck. In 2010, more than 200,000 liposuction procedures were performed in the US alone, according to the ASPS.

Many patients turn to Dr. Ward due to his extensive 25 years of experience performing body contouring procedures to treat excess fat deposits on the:

  • Midsection
  • Back
  • Thighs and legs
  • Buttocks
  • Chest
  • Arms
  • Face and neck

You may be an ideal candidate for liposuction if you are a non-smoker at a stable, healthy body weight and have good skin elasticity.

How Dr. Ward Performs Liposuction

A liposuction treatment can last anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours depending on your needs. One of our board certified anesthesiologists will administer anesthesia. For major procedures, a general anesthetic is necessary, while small volume liposuction can be done with local anesthesia.

To begin, Dr. Ward will inject tumescent liposuction solution into the areas to be treated. This serves as an anesthetic and helps prevent bruising. Then, through very small incisions, Dr. Ward will insert a small tube called a cannula. He will then use this tube to dislodge and suction out persistent fat deposits. Any fluids lost during your liposuction treatment will be replenished intravenously.

Post-Operative Steps: What to Expect

Compression garments, which Dr. Ward will apply following surgery should be worn for up to three weeks to ensure proper healing and better contour. Swelling and pain are common and may be controlled with medication. Dr. Ward may also ask you to walk shortly after the procedure.

As long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle, fat will not return to the treated area. Possible complications following liposuction may include infection, poor contour, delayed healing or blood clots. During your consultation, Dr. Ward will explain the risks of liposuction in detail, so you are fully informed before you proceed with surgery.
