Restylane

Though many other dermal fillers are joining the market to fill deep facial folds and wrinkles, Restylane is still the most popular among them in North America and more than 70 countries. At the USMD Hospital, Arlington plastic surgeon Dr. James Ward treats patients' lines and wrinkles with Restylane.

When Is Restylane the Right Choice?

Restylane, which has been used for over a decade to reduce some signs of aging on the face, contains hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in your skin. Restylane, and similar product Perlane (used to treat more severe lines and folds) is FDA approved to treat the following types of wrinkles:

  • Facial wrinkles and folds
  • Nasolabial folds

Off-label, Dr. Ward may use Restylane to treat:

  • Marionette lines
  • Fine lines
  • Hollow tear trough
  • Various facial contouring and lip augmentation

If you exhibit any of the above conditions, you may be an ideal candidate for Restylane treatment with Dr. Ward.

How Restylane Treats Wrinkles and Folds

Before Dr. Ward begins your Restylane treatment, your skin will be cleansed with an antiseptic. Using special, proven techniques, Dr. Ward will inject the solution into and below the dermis of your skin. Once injected, it will combine with the naturally occurring hyaluronic acids in your skin, which give it youthful volume. Dr. Ward may massage the injection site to ensure proper placement of the Restylane. An anesthetic is usually not necessary for Restylane treatment as it contains lidocaine, but a topical anesthetic may be applied if necessary.

Post-Treatment Steps: What to Expect

After your Restylane treatment, the injection site may feel tight or overly full. Any swelling you experience is temporary and can be controlled with the application of an ice pack. For the first day, Dr. Ward will advise you to avoid strenuous activity, alcohol and exposure to sun and heat to promote optimal healing as these may increase injection site swelling and redness. Restylane mimics the hyaluronic acid in your skin and it will be gradually absorbed and your body will clear away the filler in four to 12 months. Due to this, you may return to Dr. Ward for touch-up treatments.

Any possible side effects from Restylane treatment are temporary but may include infection, lumps or bumps, bruising or discoloration.
